finished decoupage candle holder with ribbon and bells tied around neckMake this easy candle holder to decorate your dinner table for Christmas Eve. This candle holder is made from an empty cheese spread glass jar. Stick to the traditional colors of red and white, and use a candy cane, ribbons and bells to add the finishing touches. You can even make a few of these jars, and add one next to each guest's table setting.

Total Time: one hour

Yield: one candle holder

Supplies:

  • 400g empty cheese spread glass jar
  • white paper doily
  • mini candy cane
  • small red bell
  • small silver bell
  • red and silver ribbons
  • silver thread
  • Heritage Satin Modge Podge
  • Heritage clear gloss water-based varnish
  • standard scissors
  • hairdryer
  • battery operated tea light candle

Steps:

  1. Cut the paper doily in half. Put the two halves on top of each other and cut both halves smaller so that they would be able to fit around the jar.
  2. Paint a substantial amount of Modge Podge onto the sides of the jar. Do not add any Modge Podge to the bottom of the jar, and only add Modge Podge up to the lip around the neck.
  3. Glue the first strip of the paper doily to the jar and press down lightly so that it will stick to the jar. Be careful not to tear the doily. Paint Modge Podge over the doily strip. It is best to start painting from the middle of the strip towards the sides, working in small triangles. Use your index finger to gently rub out any air bubbles from the back of the strip. Rub from the inside towards the outside and be careful not to tear the doily.

  5. Repeat step 3 with the second strip of paper doily.

  7. Use the hairdryer to dry the jar. Do not use the highest heat setting on the hairdryer, as the jar might become too hot to handle.
  8. Paint a second layer of Modge Podge over the jar, this time changing the direction in which the Modge Podge is applied from vertical to horizontal. Dry the jar with the hairdryer again.
  9. Apply one coat of the Heritage gloss water-based varnish and use the hairdryer to dry it thoroughly.
  10. Use the silver thread and tie the two bells around the neck of the jar.

  12. Tie the two ribbons around the neck of the glass jar.
  13. Tie the ribbons to the candy cane and then make a bow with each ribbon. Neatly cut the ribbon ends and add a drop of glue to the knot of the bows, so that the bows won't come loose.
  14. Add the candle and voila!
