Fabric Wrapping Paper

Silver Post Medal for All Time! 254 Posts

Fabric Wrapping Paper - variety of gifts wrapped in red stretch velvet with green bowsFabric is a great reusable wrapping paper solution. It is a sustainable and thrifty gift wrap choice. You have to spend a little more up front, but as long as you get most of the wrapping fabric back, you can continue to reuse it for years to come.

I have always disliked spending money on wrapping paper only for it to be ripped up and thrown away. Okay, some of us do carefully open the paper and save it, but it never looks as great as it did the first time. Last Christmas I said "no" to wrapping paper and spent a little extra and bought nice fabric to wrap all my gifts in. This year, I don't have to worry about wrapping paper since it is waiting for me right there in my Christmas box.

I suggest buying a fabric that has stretch to it, it makes it easier to wrap and make sure there aren't any peeking holes. Another good fabric choice would be something that is double sided.

Supplies:

Steps:

  1. I bought about 5 yards of red stretch velveteen fabric and cut it into fourths and left one piece large, the second and third piece I cut in half and the fourth piece I cut into fourths.
  2. Choose the correct size piece of fabric for your gift and place the gift in the center of the fabric.
  3. Fabric Wrapping Paper -place gift in the center of the fabric

  4. Bring the edges of two of the diagonal corners together and tie in a knot down over the gift.

  6. Take the two opposite corners up and tie them in place. You will find that two of the corners tied together have more stretch to them than the other two. Make sure to use this stretch to your advantage to get the fabric snug around the gift.
  7. Fabric Wrapping Paper - repeat with the other two corners

  8. Now, if you like, you can add an accent ribbon to the gift to make it look extra special. Note: Each gift shape may need a slightly different wrapping method.

This is a great idea! I am tired of storing rolls of wrapping paper, I believe I will buy fabric for this purpose. I can sometimes find fabric for $1-$2 a yard.
