Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix

A jar of hot chocolate mix.
This hot cocoa is chocolaty with a hint of cinnamon. Not only is making your own hot cocoa mix delicious, but it can make a great gift for the holidays. My friend is a chef and he had to make special hot chocolate mixes each year for the hotel attached to the restaurant he worked at. We based this recipe on one of his favorites. This is also quite inexpensive.

My friend is a chef and he had to make special hot chocolate mixes each year for the hotel attached to the restaurant he worked at. We based this recipe on one of his favorites. This is also quite inexpensive.

Yield: 6 Cups

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup dried milk (whole milk will be more creamy but is sometimes hard to find, I used non-fat)
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 3 Tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1/8 tsp cinnamon

Steps:

  1. You will want to work quickly, especially if you live in a humid climate because the powders can start to cake.
  2. Ingredients for the hot chocolate mixture in a bowl.

  3. Mix together 1 cup dried milk, 1/2 cup powdered sugar,3 tablespoons cocoa powder, and 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon.
  4. A bowl of the hot chocolate mixture.

  5. Sift the mix through a sieve. You can use the back of a spoon to help break up and push the bigger pieces through the mesh.
  6. Straining the hot chocolate powder.

  7. Store in an airtight container.
  8. The hot chocolate mixture in a glass jar.

  9. To make it a gift: Place 8 Tbsp of the mix for 2 cups of cocoa into a small jar. I used the spice jars from Ikea, 4oz jelly jars also work great.

  11. Top with marshmallows, you can even add some shaved chocolate.
  12. Tie with a ribbon.
  13. You can gift this with a mug if you want to make the gift a little more special. I got these mugs from Ikea for only .79 cents each. The thrift store is another great place to find mugs.
  14. A gift mug with homemade hot chocolate.

  15. To Serve: Add 4 Tbsp cocoa mix into an 8oz cup of milk (for a creamier cup) or water.

I am sorry, I guess I missed a step. I fixed the recipe above to include this: Add 4 Tbsp cocoa mix into an 8oz cup of milk (for a creamier cup) or water.
