Snowman Ivy Bowl Light

Lighted snowman made from a glass ivy bowl. front view of ivy bowl snowman

Approximate Time: About an hour to assemble. This does not count the time needed to allow the "snow" to dry and harden or bake the clay "nose".

Supplies:

  • one 4 inch glass ivy bowl with "ruffled" top
  • string of 20 clear mini lights with white wire
  • one container (4 oz) Snow-Tek Glittering Snow
  • small round sponge
  • black gloss acrylic paint
  • white acrylic paint
  • quarter-inch round stencil brush or sponge (for mouth)
  • half-inch round stencil brush or sponge (for eyes)
  • 1 block orange polymer (like Sculpey or Fimo) oven-bake clay
  • sculpey satin glaze for clay (optional)
  • small paintbrush
  • scissors
  • 1 rectangle of fleece fabric 16 x 8 inch for hat
  • 1 strip fleece fabric 2 inch wide by 27 inch long for scarf
  • 7 small snowflake buttons (optional)
  • glue - use a strong glue that will adhere to any surface and dries clear (like Alleen's Tacky Glue or Beacon 527 Multi-use glue)
  • piece of 1 inch thick Styrofoam, cut in a circle shape (approximately 3 inches in diameter) to fit inside the bowl opening
  • button shank remover or small pointed scissors

Instructions:

Bowl:

  1. Wash and dry ivy bowl. Remove all stickers or labels. (I also wipe the glass bowl with rubbing alcohol to remove oils, etc. and let this dry.)

  2. Using a sponge and fingers cover the ivy bowl with the Snow-Tek glittering snow. You can leave the top where the hat will be unpainted. Allow to dry and harden, approximately 2-3 days.

Hat:

* Note: If using striped fleece, cut the rectangle for the hat with the stripes going vertically.

  1. Fold long edge of 8 inch x16 inch fleece fabric up about 2 inches to make a cuff for the hat. Roll top edge of cuff inside and spot glue to hold in place.

  2. Cut strips along the top of the hat, about a half inch wide and 2 inches deep. This will make the tassel for the hat.

  3. Turn the ivy bowl upside down and glue the hat around the bowl. Match the edges and cut off any extra fabric so the edges meet. Glue the edges together.

  5. Gather the top of the hat and tie tightly with a thin strip of the fleece fabric to make the tassel.

Scarf:

*Note: If using striped fleece, cut the scarf with the stripes going horizontally.

Tie the 2 inch x 27 inch fleece strip around the neck of the bowl to make the scarf. Trim to desired length and cut 2 inch fringe at each end.

Nose:

  1. Knead polymer clay to make a soft, workable ball. Form into a carrot shape, about 1 and a half inches long.

  2. Use a pen or similar object to hollow out the inside a little to speed up the drying process.

  3. Push the carrot against the snowman's face where you will be placing it, to shape the bottom of the carrot so it will fit snugly against the bowl.

  4. Use a toothpick, knife or fingernail to make horizontal lines around the carrot.

  5. Stand upright onto piece of foil and bake according to package instructions.

  7. When hard and cool, paint with Sculpey glaze, if desired.

  8. When dry, glue in place on ivy bowl to make the snowman's nose.

Eyes and Mouth:

  1. Using a stencil brush or sponge and glossy black acrylic paint, paint the eyes and mouth on the snowman's face, to resemble coal.

  2. Paint a tiny white dot at the bottom corner of each eye.

  3. When paint is dry, insert string of lights inside the bowl with the plug end of the string coming out the bottom.

  4. Push Styrofoam circle into neck of bowl to hold lights in place.

  5. Remove shanks from the snowflake buttons and glue around the cuff of the hat.

*As with all such lights, do not leave light burning for long periods of time unattended. side view of ivy bowl snowman showing the nose in profile
