Christmas Wrappings

Don't buy new Christmas wrapping paper if at all possible. There are lots of things you can use instead; try to recycle and reuse instead.
For example:

  • Turn an empty foil-type potato chip bag inside out, wash it down, and use it as wrapping paper or as a gift bag. You can also cut the foil chip bag into strips to make the bow or curling ribbons.

  • Use the wrapper from reams of copy paper or printer paper, turned inside out, as wrapping paper. Stamp images on the blank side for decorations, or have your kids color a picture of holiday stuff on it.

  • Use the color comics as wrapping paper.

  • Use old color calendars and posters and magazines and flower catalogs as wrapping paper.

  • If you know a paperboy or delivery person, they usually throw out the brown paper that the newspapers come wrapped in. This is GREAT wrapping paper; just decorate it with stamps or paints or drawings.

  • Sometimes the local newspaper has roll-ends of newsprint that you can ask for and have for free.

  • If you sew, make a cloth gift bag that can be re-used again and again.

  • And of course, try to re-use any gift bags or wrappings that you saved from last year!

This year I've been using the front of all of the Christmas cards that I'd saved since last year. I find one that coordinates with the gift wrap I'm using (you'd be surprised at how many times you find a perfect match) and just tape it to the front of the box. It's a great way to recycle those beautiful Christmas cards that I didn't have the heart to throw away last year!
