Saw it in a book just yesterday: acrylic paint and any kind of paintbrush. I think this is just for decoration, I don't think light will shine through them. In the photograph they looked pretty opaque.

I paint on regular lightbulbs (40-60 watt type) first thing i do is wipe bulb down with Isopropyl alcohol, let dry. I then spray a white primer on the bulb..this way i have a surface that will hold the acrylic paint. I then proceed to paint the bulb...santa's, reindeer etc.

The little Christmas light bulbs make a cute Reindeer...paint the bulb brown...add "facial" features. Use a pipe clearner wrapped around the metal part for antlers! Hope this helps ya...

By the way...my method on painting on lightbulbs that I just posted is for "burnt" out lightbulbs....the lightbulb becomes an ornament not a light source!

Go to www.google.com and type in...painted christmas bulbs. There are several on there. Some are decorated into something else.

Hope this helps.

I always take a light grade sand paper and do a swipe around the light bulb. Rubbing alcohol has the same effect and use an acrylic paint for the face or design.

I had extra clear lights from last Christmas and needed lights for Halloween so I just cleaned them with alcohol and painted them orange with acrylic paint. They came out great!

I plan to do a couple strands with alternating red and white to wrap around trees for Christmas. I hope it will give the impression of candy canes.
