I haven't bought new Christmas decorations in years, because I can find items nicer than the ones I could afford, in thrift shops. I add them to my collection of decorations, which I store every year until Christmas. I have quite a few items: small trees, a wreath, ornaments, and so on, but I like very small ornaments, as I have several desk top trees.

You go girl! I have a plethera of ornaments that I have gathered through out the years that I love and never paid full price for any of them. These three cost me 1.00 each and I love them. Kudos' for the great suggestion. PBP
So true!
I moved here to the UK in 2010 when I married a Scotsman-had to leave just about everything behind as the shipping costs were just beyond our budget. We're in our mid-fifties so I was leaving behind A lot of household goods; he was a life long bachelor of spartan tastes, this house was bare!
Here in Scotland most thrift shops are run by recognized charities like British Red Cross and British Heart Foundation; we do all our shopping for household goods, clothing, knick-knacks, even appliances at the charity shops first-the charity shops have been a real blessing for just about everything we've needed.
Monday afternoon we picked up fifty metres of gorgeous glass bead garland, 25 mini tree ornaments, and 30 beautiful Christmas cards at the British Heart Foundation shop. I've got my eye out for candle bridges now but I doubt I'll find those until after the holiday season. Over summer we found a large bag of vintage glitter glass baubles I know date back to the 1920s, I was so thrilled to find those!
It's mind-boggling what people donate to the charity shops and worth a look in those first for anything you need.
