Years ago, my brothers made one. They had 5 pieces of 1x2 that were the same length. They nailed them together to create a 5 point star. The length of the board determines the size of the star.
After they finished putting it together, they added lights on it so that they stayed on and only had to be plugged in each year. They put two boards on hinges at the back to prop it up (on the roof). If 2 13 year olds can figure it out. An adult can too. My father used that star for about 15 years.
We took a 4' by 4' of 1/4" plywood, drew a star on it, cut it out then painted it white. Drill holes around the edges for the lights to poke up from the back measureing your hole spacing by your string of lights. We used glue to hold the lights in but if you do make sure you don't get glue on the bulb so you can change them when they burn out and put a staple on either side of the hole.
