My husband was surprised that I had started to buy little Christmas gifts before Halloween! But there are so many people we would like to give little gifts to at church, work and so on. So I start to shop around for Christmas gifts in the fall, so I can take advantage of bargains, and defray the costs over several months. I am usually done by the beginning of December, so I can avoid the holiday rush.

I buy gifts all year long. Mostly at yard sales. You can find brand new never opened nice gifts!
Ditto Jennifer's comment. I have found Lennox, Micasa, etc. all in boxes. In a recent sale, a husband chastised the wife for writing price on the box saying 'people buy these as gifts...put a label on it w/the price." Who knew husbands have such prescience!

I buy Christmas-themed items at all of the after-Christmas sales. You can usually get those items for 50% to 75% off.
Though the following tip was actually regarding gifts for my bridal shower, the basic idea applies to gifts for Christmas, birthday, anniversary, graduation, etc.: My husband and I registered at two stores.
One of the items I really wanted was a toaster oven. My wedding was more than six months away when I noticed a sale ad that showed the $100 toaster oven was on sale for $39.99. I know this is against etiquette rules, but I immediately called my Mom & told her about the sale. She ran out & bought it & notified a family member that was going to be attending my bridal shower about the deal she got on the toaster oven & that person bought it off my Mom to give to me at the bridal shower.
After that, I then notified my Mom about any other sales I saw on the items listed on our registry & it saved my family members $$$. I also registered at a store that consistently mails out 20% off coupons.
I know my family was grateful for these discounts & I didn't mind that they were saving money on our gifts. In fact, I would've been upset if they had not taken advantage of the discounts! I want everyone to save $!
So, now our family notifies each other of items that we would like for birthday, Christmas, etc. when it goes on sale before the event so that we can save $.
It is the middle of October and I am finished with my Christmas shopping and most of my son's birthday gifts which is in March all but my new granddaughter who is due any day now. I have to meet her before I can shop. However, I do have her a few little things.
It's never too early to Christmas shop or any holiday or occasion for that matter! I keep a bin in the closet with gifts I find. Yesterday I found my children some wonderful new sealed items at a garage sale. I have wrapped them up nice used items tho and they don't know the difference and I doubt would care anyway....it's just nice for them to have a lot of things to open.

why do people take the word christ out of christmas and use xmas instead? what is the x supposed to mean

When my kids were small I used to buy presents in the fall. I bought each of them one each time and wrapped them and labledthem. Then I hid them. One summer I was doing some deep cleaning and I found some presents, one for each. We had a little Christmas in the summer.
