Use Photos as Gift Tags at Christmas

I have a Christmas package tip to share: My niece, just turned 5, loves to pass out the gifts on Christmas morning at my house. Since she hasn't learned to read yet, I decided I would make it easier for her.

Instead of putting names on the packages, I put a picture of the recipient. She picks up a package and sees her pictures, she knows that one is hers. She gets a package with granddaddy's picture on it, she takes it to granddaddy. She loves it. I like to use funny pictures that I have taken through out the year and everyone gets a laugh from their picture.

It puts a few more laughs in the passing out and Rebekah feels like she is the master of ceremonies. It's fun. I printed as many pictures as I needed from the computer, this way it doesn't cost anything.

I did something a bit similar last year, only it was the opposite. To the gifts we gave our grandchildren, we put a wallet-sized picture of ourselves (covered with laminating for the younger ones) Most of our grandchildren live great distances from us so we don't see them very often.

This not only helped the little ones really understand who sent the gift, but each had his/her own picture to carry around and remember us by. Judging by feedback from our kids, the youngsters were more excited about the pictures than they were the presents.

This is such a great idea! ... I bet your niece will appreciate it.

---> It would be cool to also write the names on the back in bold capital letters because then you could use the tags later in the day as sort of Flash Cards to teach her to actually read the names... This would be a super-fun game between you & her...

Just have her look at the name on the back & have her try to read it then turn the tag over to see if she's read the name of the person correctly. I bet within 5 or 10 minutes of this you'll have taught her to read everyone in the family's name!

Great idea. We often have little ones wanting to help pass gifts at Christmas - I'm going to remember that.

One observation though: printing photos from your computer isn't a "free" option. Many people think of it as free because they have already paid for the supplies and are often only printing a few images at a time, so they don't see how the costs add up.

Printer ink is incredibly expensive, and printing photos in color on your own printer can actually cost you MORE in ink (not to mention the paper and the electricity to run it) than sending them to a lab to be printed. Many places offer photo printing for 8 or 10 cents an image - very cheap indeed. The quality isn't up to a professional lab, but if you're using the photos as gift tags, that's not an issue.

The added bonus of using Target or Walmart or Walgreens is that your photo has gone through an actual photo process, so won't fade as quickly and won't run if a little water gets on it.

So the next time you decide to print out a few photos of the grandkids to show your friends, think about the hard cost of doing it from your printer. Send them out to be printed and save some money.
