We're having a difficult time deciding on what to get two married couples for Christmas (one is older and one is young). Like most people we have limited income so I am looking for some ideas on some nice, but inexpensive gifts. I would like to give them something to share. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you.

When you say older couple, I'm thinking senior citizens. Home care products are always nice to get and can be shared, like a foot soaker or a full length vibrating chair cushion with heat, large print books, jigsaw puzzles, puzzle books, and things that keep the mind stimulated and the body joints moving. Not everyone in this age group are incapacitated, so it depends on this couple's ability level as to what I would choose.
Young couples mostly enjoy getting out and doing and having hobbies. Not knowing them, it's pretty generalized to suggest a tank of gas for their vehicle to take a nice scenic drive and get a bite to eat somewhere, or tickets to a museum or Broadway play. www.thriftyfun.com/
What have you noticed the younger couple doesn't have: towels {inexpensive at Walmarts, even two towels and
two washcloths would do]. My grandson needs towels, and a nice mid-size stainless pot in his apartment.A small but comprehensive tool kit for the car is good. Harbor Freight has nice range of prices for tools. Glass sets so they can get rid of plastic glasses, associated with health problems for men, now.
For older couple: Nice picture frame with room for lots of pix for family photos. New coffee pot if old is ragged. For anyone into gardening, a fruit tree. Can be planted many places in winter unless there's snow.
A book for a hobby they can do together, say wine-making, if they've indicated interest. Nice jam and scone mix, or food snack item for nights when they don't feel like cooking.
Towel sets, sheet sets, blankets, throws, jar mixes, unique baking pans(there are so many now), gift cards, if you know the needs of the older couple a shower bench could be useful(not very glamorous, but very useful), maybe some other useful items that would be good for people that have mobility problems, or things to make life a little easier, like grabbers(these are even good for younger people that are short).
One year I gave my Dad a box of groceries and he was really impressed, I included cans of his favorite soups, chili, a couple packages of cookies, a box of crackers, a package of sliced cheese, a loaf of bread, a couple boxes of tissures, a package of toilet tissue, a roll of paper towels, a package of styrofoam plates, and a package of styrofoam bowls and a couple packages of silverware. That way he didn't have to do dishes all the time and he wasn't one to do any cooking. At the last minute I baked a cake in a foil pan and included that. My sisters who lived closer to him would make extra when they cooked and make TV dinners for him.
A movie bucket. You have seen them around I am sure. Get a good movie, something different for each couple of course. Put this in a popcorn bucket with popcorn, candy like you find at the concession stand, maybe wrap it with a nice throw that they can snuggle up under.
Since you want "something they can share," focus on things that give them an experience. Because you have a smaller budget, a good "bang for your buck" can be found at restaurant.com. You can buy a gift card for dinner for a fraction of the cost of what you'd generally pay dining out.
If you like to cook a box of home baked goodies would be nice or a coupon for a home cooked meal from you or if they have children you could offer a evening of sitting with them have a Merry Christmas.
A plate of homemade fudge! store bought or homemade, doesn't matter.
I can't tell you what to get your friends, but I can tell you what I got the couple I know: it's called the Purrfect OpeneRx. I found it on MaxiAids.com. It's cute - it's cat-shaped, has several doo-dads for opening medicine bottles, and the end of the cat's tail is sharp for piercing blister packs. It also includes a magnet, so your friends can keep it handy by sticking it on their refrigerator.
