Divide Plants for Frugal Holiday Gifts

I have too many people on my Christmas list and not enough money. This year I've planted my spider plant babies into decorative coffee mugs and some into old glass pedestal candle holders and adorned them with homemade bows and candy canes. I am using them as gifts for those I need to give just a little something to. I had a bunch of mugs that I never use, I put a few pebbles in the bottom and topped with potting soil. They look lovely and also helped clean out my cabinet of unused glassware.

Congratulations for giving such wonderful gifts. I myself appreciate a gift that has been handmade. I teach 3rd and 4th graders Jr. Master Gardener classes at local schools and I keep a great many spider plant "mothers" under my gro-lights all year long to use in class.

When I show them the "babies" and how they can grow into new plants the children are thrilled. I have seen children in later years from my classes and they usually tell me that they still have the spider plant and their plant has babies.
