close up garlandThis past December we were looking for decoration ideas for our Solstice tree in our yard. We decided to make popcorn strings for the tree. Not only would it look nice, but we hoped that some of the birds might get to enjoy it too.

Total Time: 1 hour

Yield: 1-2 strings

Supplies:

  • plain popped popcorn
  • sewing thread
  • a long hand-sewing needle

Steps:

  1. We used an air popper and popcorn seeds to make our popcorn. One batch made an entire stock pot of popcorn.
  2. Decide on how long you want your popcorn string to be and cut that length of thread. Tie a knot at one end of the thread and put the other end through your needle. Carefully push the needle through a piece of popcorn.

  4. Gently push the piece down to the end of the string. Continue until your length of thread is full of popcorn. Tie off the end of the thread and use it to decorate.

And be sure to put the popcorn and cranberries out for the birds and squirrels after Christmas but take them off of the string first. :-)

Does anyone make strings of popcorn to put on the tree anymore? I used to love helping my mother do this. It's inexpensive and traditional. (You can also use cranberries - but they have gotten so expensive!)

Another easy and cheap garland is a popcorn garland. String popcorn together using a large needle and thread (or fishing line). You can add a little color by mixing in some raw cranberries.
